Paleo Diet Explained

Paleo Diet Done Right

While a Paleo Diet is quite a drastic change from the USDA dietary recommendations, it makes sense that a whole-food diet void of the inflammatory foods (like gluten and dairy), chemicals, additives, and hormones has become so popular in recent years. It's even one of the most prescribed foundational diets by Functional Medicine practitioners. People just feel better and get better with this style of eating! The Paleo lifestyle movement focuses on basic dietary and lifestyle principles proven time and again to optimize health and longevity; while the USDA guidelines are focused largely on the specific food industries that drive the American economy (wheat, soy, corn, and dairy). Have you ever wondered why the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) is even in charge of our dietary recommendations? At Wellness Doctor we believe that as smart consumers we should all question the potential bias behind the standard dietary recommendations.

As human beings with a desire to thrive, function, move and enjoy life to its fullest, we should ALL take the time to explore various dietary strategies in order to discover what works best for each of us as individuals. While some may find that a balanced Mediterranean diet is perfect, others may find that they thrive on a lower carb diet ketogenic style plan, and many find that a simple Paleo diet suites them best. But don't let all of these dietary terms confuse you! That’s what we're here for; to help every patient understand the various diets out there and implement one based on individual health goals, history, habits, schedule and needs.

With all of the various diets and eating strategies being promoted today, here at Wellness Doctor the Paleo diet is (and likely always will be) one of our favorites! While many believe this ancestral-style of diet is mostly meat-based, the approach that we encourage at our office is actually heavily plant-based with plenty of healthy fats and organic/grass fed meats thrown in. The Paleo diet isn't just about eating loads of bacon and butter; rather its about getting in touch with our food (and knowing where it is coming from when possible), eating in a mindful and ethical manner and incorporating daily practices to encourage balance and nourishment. We believe these are the true keys to health and longevity and are the key reasons why so many feel SO GREAT upon transitioning to a Paleo style of diet.
